Everything you need to know to organise a religious wedding ceremony in a church
The religious wedding ceremony, from the sacred point of view, goes beyond the relationship between two people.
From the Christian’s perspective, the wedding is a sacred event, and the spouses that desire to celebrate it in a church want to live this moment in the most profound way possible.
There are so many foreign people that every year choose Italy as their destination wedding Country. Some of them decide to make this big step according to a religious tradition.
In Italy, we have one of the best artistic heritage in the world, and this includes lots of churches too.
When you decide to organise a wedding with a religious wedding ceremony in a church, there are some elements to consider for its success.
In this article, we will help you evaluate the unexpected details and organise everything necessary to have a great wedding in a church.
Our advice will focus primarily on the different time of the day in which the ceremony can be organised and the difference between a summer wedding and a winter one.
Ceremony in church during the morning
An advantage of getting married in the morning allows you to enjoy your celebrations from morning till night.
But let’s start from the moment the couple are getting ready.
Usually, a religious wedding during morning time is celebrated from 10 am to 12 pm.
This detail is often underestimated, but it’s quite essential to consider.
To be ready at the church at 10 am, it means that the preparation needs to start quite early.
If for the groom getting ready means simply to wear a suit, getting prepared for the bride means taking care of lots of essential details like makeup, hairstyle and the dressing part. All of these are crucial steps that need to be done.
Organising a wedding during morning time, following all these steps, leads to the fact that we would have to wake up quite early to get to the church on time.
When the alarm goes off early in the morning, the slept hours will be just a few.
How can you solve this issue?
– It is better to celebrate the wedding during afternoon time, but only if this is taking place during summertime and not winter.
– Find a church close to the place in which you will get ready and hire a team of makeup artists and hairstylists that can take care of you and your witnesses at the same time.
From the photographers perspective, our work also starts around 7:30 am.
At SeptemVisual, we usually work on a team, and often, we shoot the groom’s preparation first and then the bride’s one.
If both are getting ready in the same location, it is much easier to work. In the eventuality, the areas are different and distant from each other; we can value an optimal plan to have the necessary time to take beautiful images and with the perfect light.

Ceremony in a church during afternoon time
If you have to choose between these two options, the religious wedding in a church during afternoon time is the one we suggest.
There are some practical reasons to consider. It is beneficial for us and also for all the guests, to wake up stress-free from the timing preparation and get to work more peacefully. There will also be more time for a transfer from the location to the church.
Regarding this, we need to consider two essential aspects:
• The local photographer
If you choose to hire a local photographer, you certainly will have the advantage to avoid the cost of an eventual transfer or accommodation to reach the wedding location. You may have to cover the expenses of the transfer to the church, but make sure you previously agree on this with the photographer.
• The destination wedding photographer
If you decide to hire a destination wedding photographer, you will have a team of professionals ready in the location of your choice. In this case, you will have to consider the expenses of the accommodation and maybe also a vehicle to facilitate the transfer to the church.
You should also consider the advantages of having a photographer the day before the wedding.
This can be helpful for him to get to know the location better and give some advice regarding the photography shooting session.
Plus, you won’t have to consider any new transfer’s expenses.
Which ceremony is more convenient? The morning or the afternoon one?
We explained in detail the differences between the two celebrations. We also valued the aspects based on the distance between the location and the church.
Now, let’s take a more in-depth look at the different time of the day, and how to choose the most beneficial one according to the different season of the year.
When you start to organise your wedding day, the first thing to do is to decide the moment of the year. Not every month has the same daylight.
Let’s make a difference between:
– winter wedding
– wedding during spring/autumn
– summer wedding
A winter wedding
A winter wedding is often organised close to Christmas time, and the ceremony celebrated during this time has a definite meaning for all the Christian.
There are many advantages to organising a wedding during this time of the year, and also some disadvantages too.
You can have a look at our previous article regarding why choosing a winter wedding is excellent to consider.
The disadvantages, in reality, are just some aspects to value.
One of these is the length of the day.
When a couple decides to organise a religious wedding during wintertime, usually this is celebrated during the first hours of the day, to enjoy most hours with light.
For a photographer, this is essential as it’s one of the best ways to have stunning pictures.
What we advise is to celebrate the wedding around noon time: this can allow you to take advantage of a few hours in the early morning to get ready and also have the best light of the day for the photography photo shooting.
Wedding in spring/autumn
The wedding celebrated in spring and autumn time, even if quite different regarding colours, it has some similar characteristics from the light point of view. The hours with the sun are the same, and also the temperatures are quite similar.
We always advise couples to organise the ceremony during morning time, in the first part of March or October as the sunlight is getting lower faster, while would be best to host an afternoon wedding in a time between 3 pm and 4 pm in April/May and September.
Today, the summer wedding is the most common choice. The reasons are many: the sunlight, the favourable temperatures, the choice between different locations and the selection of the flowers too.
The amount of light in months like June, July and August are incredible.
If the ceremony is celebrated during morning time, it is usually possible to have two photography sessions during the day. One would be straight after the service and the other as soon as the light became just perfect for doing it.
A professional photographer will consider the best light to be during sunset time and will try to realise the photography shooting at this moment.
The advantage of booking a location for the entire day is undoubtedly the one to have these two photo sessions, obviously if you want to.
Very often, the summer wedding is celebrated from 3 pm to 5 pm.
Our best advice is to choose the time frame close to 5 pm, especially if you want to avoid the wedding reception to be quite early. This also depends on the distance of the location you choose for your ceremony to the church.
If this is quite far, it would be convenient to organise the wedding ceremony around 3 pm.
If you choose the perfect timing, you will realise that the wedding aperitif will happen just in the middle of the day.
And if you organise this correctly, you will get to the wedding location on the perfect timing to celebrate with your family and friends, and you will be happy to have your wedding photoshoot taking advantage of the sunlight during the sunset, our favourite moment of the day.
On the other hand, if the ceremony is celebrated quite late and the location is also far from the church, you will have just a few hours to enjoy the rest of the day, and you will need to make a choice: the aperitif or the photoshoot.
We can give you a choice if by any chance the sunlight will be lower, and you want to have the aperitif too: you can add to your wedding package an extra day to focus only on the photoshoot.
You would have the possibility to enjoy a moment of relaxing and dedicate your wedding day to your guests.
Find below the best time of the day according to the months:
– Weddings in March/April or September/October preferably between 3 pm and 4 pm, mainly if the church is located far away from the wedding location. It’s also an excellent option to have the ceremony at noon.
– Weddings in June/July/August, the best time for the ceremony is at 4 pm or 5 pm.
